10 DAY TRIP
Day 1: Arrive in Arusha, Tanzania
Upon arrival in Arusha, Tanzania at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by Allan Njamakuya himself or our driver guide to help you gather your belongings and assist at customs and immigration. Then, you will be transferred to a beautiful lodge that is nestled on the lower slopes of Mt. Meru for your first overnight in Africa. (Overnight at Iboru Safari Lodge.)
Day 2: Arusha National Park
Today, you will head to Arusha National Park for a game drive. Giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs and baboons can be seen year round at this park. It's also the only place on the northern safari circuit where the black-and-white colobus monkey is also easily seen. In the middle of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater. It is actually a collapsed volcano (caldera), shaped like a basin with steep walls that are covered with dense rainforest. Its bottom is covered with marshy grassland, where you may see elephants, buffalos, warthogs, monkeys, baboons, leopards, spotted hyenas, some antelopes and many species of birds. We will head back to the lodge later this afternoon for relaxing time. (Overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge.)
Days 3: Tarangire National Park
Departing Arusha, we will drive across the Maasai village, with simple houses built of sticks tied together and then filled with cow dung. We will be heading towards Tarangire National Park, a lovely, quiet park with huge concentrations of animals in the peak months and a fraction of the visitors of any of the other Northern parks. It gives visitors the quietest game viewing environment of all the parks in the region. Elephants are the main attraction. During peak season, you'll also see wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, Thompson's gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, eland, leopard and cheetah. Tarangire is also one of Tanzania's finest birding destinations. (Overnight at Tarangire, Angata luxury tented camp.)
Day 4: Lake Manyara National Park via Ngorongoro Crater
Today we head to Lake Manyara for a game drive for a few hours, then after that, we will continuing our trip to Ngorongoro. Lake Manyara National Park consists of a shallow soda lake at the foot of the Great Rift Valley's western slopes. The algae growing in the lake, attract large flocks of flamingos while much of the wildlife concentrates on the strips of land along its shores. The park's main attraction are the famous tree climbing lions. Lake Manyara is also home to buffalo, antelope, zebra and giraffe and a growing elephant population. You may also see hippo pods and basking crocodiles.
We will also visit Ngorongoro Crater as we are heading to our camp. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the greatest destinations in the world. It is often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." Lunch will be at a picnic site. We will visit the fascinating Maasai tribe, learn about their way of life and watch them dance and sing. (Overnight at Angata Tented Camp in Ngorongoro.)
Days 5: Ngorongoro Crater
This morning you will descend 2,000 feet to the base of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest caldera. The park is teaming with wildlife, including lions, zebra, hyenas, buffalo and wildebeests. It is also considered a bird-watcher's paradise. We will return to the lodge in time for hot showers and dinner and to watch the sun set at the campsite. (Overnight at Angata Tented Camp in Ngorongoro.)
Day 6: Serengeti National Park.
Today we leave the crater and make our way through the Great Rift Valley, Maasai Country to the Serengeti. We will explore the great Serengeti for the next three days. The Serengeti is a vast ecosystem with an impressive variety of life and the largest migration on the planet. Serengeti National Park is most famous because of the annual migration of wildebeest along with zebras, impala and gazelles. The predator viewing is also exceptional with huge numbers of lion, cheetah, hyena and crocodiles.
You may spot all of the BIG FIVE animals: Lions, Rhinos, Elephants, Leopards, and the African Buffalo during this part of your trip. Also over 300 species of birds can be seen in this park. You will enjoy a box lunch during the game viewing and return to camp for dinner. (Overnight at Ang'ata Luxury Tented Serengeti Camp)
Day 7: North Serengeti
Today we hope to see the great migration of wildebeest trying to cross the deadly Mara river, where crocodiles will prey on them. We will continue our search for other animals we haven't yet seen, including the elusive leopard. Of the Big Five, the African Leopard is the hardest to spot because it is a master of camouflage and stealth. (Overnight at Ang'ata Luxury Tented Serengeti Camp)
Day 8: Central Serengeti
Today after breakfast, we will head to the central Serengeti, hoping to see more wildlife. Seronera River Valley encompasses a large portion of Central Serengeti. The valley's river keeps the vegetation plentiful and is another area for prime wildlife-viewing opportunities. (Overnight at Luxury Tented Camp in Central Serengeti)
Day 9: Serengeti National Park
After an early departure, we will head to Olduvai Gorge. Olduvai Gorge is a steep ravine that stretches across the Eastern Serengeti Plains. Deposits on the sides of it date as far back as 2.1 million years, yielding fossil remains of human ancestral species. We will make a brief stop at a fascinating archeological museum where the remains of the earliest human being were discovered in this area. A special treat awaits you this evening at our wonderful lodge. Acacia Farm Lodge is an elegant Tanzania lodge, located between the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks on one side and Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park on the other. (Overnight at Acacia Farm Lodge)
Day 10: Back to Arusha
We will depart after breakfast and drive back to Arusha to enjoy a bit of shopping and a farewell late lunch. You will have time to rest and relax before heading to the airport for your departing flight. (Day rooms at Ilboru Safari Lodge.)
